This book, a collaboration between the Cleveland Museum of Art and The Phillips Collection, explores van Gogh’s process of producing multiple versions of a composition. Each museum owns a painting of men repairing the pavement under enormous plane trees. Details from each of these two paintings, The Large Plane Trees (Cleveland) and The Road Menders (Phillips) are featured on the cover. The similarities and differences between these two paintings, as well as other van Gogh repetitions, are analyzed in great detail by curators and conservators at both institutions. The design of the jacket, endpapers and dividers throughout the book reflect the way van Gogh often changed the color value when painting the same subject again and again.
